Making Waves in Education
You’ve heard it in the home, on the job, in the classroom, and in virtually every other situation that demands a certain level of stability – ‘DON’T make waves!’ (Of course, many of you consistently disregarded the warning. You know who you are.)
Surprisingly, one institution of higher learning has decided that wave-making is a good thing. And it has become the foundation for a unique educational option. I’m referring to the Center for Surf Research launched at San Diego State University. That’s right – SURF RESEARCH. Ahh, how things have changed since I strolled through the halls of higher learning.
The purpose of the Center is to develop a greater knowledge and awareness of, you guessed it… surfing. But the facility goes well beyond the recreational side of the sport. In its own laid-back style, the Center provides students with an opportunity to explore the full spectrum of surf culture and the power the $7 billion global industry.
This L.A. Times article offers a vivid picture of this unique educational option. Have a look. You’ll discover that, along with everything else, the Center is doing its part to improve international relations. Who would’ve guessed?
