Magnets for Millennials
To further its role as a major stepping stone to a rewarding career, higher education increasingly is heeding the call of Millennials. Across the nation, campuses are custom-crafting a wide range of Millennial-friendly programs intended to pave a smooth road to post-college success. But as this sizable segment of the population continues streaming into the workforce, a major question looms: Are companies keeping pace with the breakthroughs being implemented by the more forward-looking colleges and universities?
The first step, of course, is knowing exactly what’s taking shape at these progressive institutions. To provide a clear picture of the possibilities, here are some noteworthy examples of Millennial-responsive programs currently in place. All of these programs offer companies and other colleges a tremendously valuable blueprint for launching their own Millennial-attracting strategies.
Cross-Campus Collaboration. An interesting new chemistry is brewing on many campuses. The ingredients of this brew are different educational disciplines brought together in a synergistic bond. For example, room was made for biomedical engineering classes in the new nursing school of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The hope is that frequent interactions with the nursing world will give engineering students a healthy dose of reality, which in turn will improve the development of medical equipment.
Environmental Evolution. More and more classrooms are being designed to enhance team learning. In these collaborative environments, instructors are relocating from the front of the classroom to the center, a position more conducive to group interaction.
Keeping It Real. The idea of a realistic learning environment has long been incorporated in professional schools. Case in point are the moot courts so well known to any law student. But now undergrads are clamoring for more realistic learning environments that will acclimate them to the demanding world of work. Many campuses are accommodating this wish by creating stimulating learning spaces that emphasize practical experiences over theoretical content.
These are just some of the intriguing Millennial-friendly strategies being implemented by a growing number of colleges and universities. If you want more info about connecting with Millennials, feel free to drop a question or two into the comment box.
