Is College More Affordable Than You Think?
It seems a day can’t go by without something about this topic screaming at us from the media. Am I talking about soaring gas prices? Uh-uh. Presidential campaigns? Nope. I’m referring to a question on the minds of every college student and would-be student – what will four years of academia cost me? According to news sources, you better have access to a fat wallet, a hefty credit line, and a money tree in full bloom. After four years of absorbing knowledge from the halls of higher learning, you’ll be lucky to leave with the shirt still on your back. At least, that’s the way they see it. But there are a number of experts who maintain that college could be more affordable than you think. Believe me, if you do some deep digging, you’ll probably find this to be true.
A good place to begin your process of discovery is a ‘net price calculator’, which is now a required tool on every school’s website. You also can mine a wealth of valuable insights from this intriguing article that appeared in the Washington Post. One of the article’s most eye-opening revelations is the number of cost-saving opportunities commonly overlooked by students. For instance, many attendees ignore or are unaware of generous student aid and work study programs offered by campuses. A combination of these resources actually can make the cost of attending a major university lower than that of a state college!
While the article contains a number of similar revelations about lowering the cost of college, my absolute favorite has got to be — ‘Nothing can replace a conversation with the school’s financial aid office!’ Makes a whole lotta sense, doesn’t it?
