WHY DOES THIS MILLENNIAL GENERATION WANT TO WORK IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WAY?
I am often asked, “Is the workplace going to change or is this new generation at work going to have to change?” My money is on the workplace making the majority of changes that, I think, will be good for all employees.
In other blogs I have talked about what this new generation at work wants. In this blog, I want to talk about WHY. Although these comments are general and don’t apply to everyone, most young adults born on the ‘80s and ‘90s, called the millennials, have had many of the same experiences.
- Remember the old saying “Children should be seen and not heard?” Well, today’s parents do not subscribe to this saying. Young people are very vocal and are used to expressing their opinion — asked or not!
- Today’s competitive world has caused many parents to have a variety of coaches for their kids. Whether or not it is for a sport, a musical instrument, SATs, AP Calculus, or almost anything else important in their child’s life, these kids are used to being coached. They will want to be coached at work as well.
- Quite a few parents have spent a lot of time and effort stopping or softening some pretty natural disappointments and consequences that should have come their child’s way as a learning event. Because of this parental interceding, the consequences of some undesirable behaviors may show up for the first time at work. A young professional’s first supervisor needs to be ready for this.
- Most of these young people grew up with the phrase “You can be anything you want to be.” I love the optimism of this sentiment, but it needs to be tempered in the workplace. Smart and progressive organizations do provide career ladders and career workshops along with mentors and coaches to demonstrate a future path for these young professionals.
Understanding some of the WHYs behind behaviors will assist the supervisors and managers of these young professionals as they work with them to get off to a positive start.
