Step Into the Spotlight
By now you’ve heard…Unless you’re eyeballing the world’s most unpopular career, you’ll likely be facing some stiff competition for your first post-college job. Employers, of course, factor in numerous criteria to narrow down the field of candidates to their chosen one. Among the variables that go under their microscope are the usual fare of GPA, school, extracurricular activities, etc. But the hiring honchos also take into account a number of other, often little-known considerations.
One of these is the standout factor. How well do you stand apart from all the other candidates vying for your dream job? “Not an issue,” you beam. I’m a 4.0 campus superstar.” Wonderful. Now here’s a newsflash. You’re not the only scholar in the universe. And employers know that. For this reason, mega-scholarship alone does not automatically thrust you into the spotlight.
So how do you take center stage in the eyes of employers? This fascinating USA Today article showcases six proven attention-getters no hiring honcho can resist. One that particularly caught my eye was the recommendation to take charge. No, this doesn’t imply bursting into the human resources office and demanding a leadership position. The advice specifically refers to showing initiative, even if your dream job isn’t open right away. If you’ve got your heart set on a company, maintain continuous contact with the people inside – without overdoing, of course. There’s no better way to demonstrate passion and genuine interest than good old persistence. This is a quality no employer can overlook.
No matter what career you’ve targeted, the guidelines presented in this article will be a major eye-opener. So dive in and let me know what you think.
