Rewarding Careers Even a Sorcerer’s Apprentice Would Like
Once upon a time an aspiring sorcerer had some trouble with a whole lot of brooms. It took a masterful intervention from the would-be enchanter’s boss to set things right. Afterwards, one very relieved sorcerer’s apprentice realized you just don’t leap into a job without proper training.
Fortunately, no rampant broomsticks will threaten the modern-day apprentice, as careers in the enchanted arts are severely limited. Nevertheless, apprenticeships are becoming increasingly traveled routes to a variety of rewarding careers.
“Not for me,” you calmly protest. I’m cruising through college, marching straight into a fabulous office gig, and assuming the corporate throne in three years, give or take. Or engineering the first non-stop, international voyage the plant the first Starbucks on Mars.”
Kudos to you for you lofty ideals! These are noble goals, indeed! Now here’s a heaping helping of reality to chew on – approximately 1.7 million Americans graduated from college this past spring. Along with facing a job market tighter than a rusty vise, many of these diploma-wielding scholars will be shouldering mountains of debt. The truth is, you could be pounding a lot of pavement before sauntering into your dream job. And all the while, that debt load will be digging heavier and heavier into your aching shoulders.
You can fulfill your post-collegiate ambitions, of course. But if the rugged road ahead jangles your nerves, you might want to give serious consideration to the apprenticeship option. Rather than dumping a Mt. Everest of debt on your shoulders, an apprenticeship gives your career a jump start with practical on-the-job training for a specific, typically well-paying trade. And when this education is under your belt, you won’t be owing money…you’ll be making it, likely in an amount substantially higher than peanuts.
Check out this CBS News article and video, which puts the spotlight on this timely topic. The exploration is well-supported by interviews covering eye-opening apprenticeship success stories. Have a look and let me know what you think of this unique route to career opportunities.
