Praise to the Millennials
Teamwork always has been a mainstay of corporate America. But for Millennials, the concept holds special significance. To this vast group of young people, success is not a complete success unless everyone on their team has taken part.
In a Millennial’s eyes, teamwork also involves a very personal dimension. These young people need to know that they as individuals made a significant contribution to their team’s outcome – that their group couldn’t operate efficiently if they weren’t part of it. Hence, their craving for individual recognition in the form of praise. But here’s an important distinction – the praise must be shared generously with everyone on their team. Leave one deserving person out of the praise pool, and many a feather will be ruffled.
Of course, it’s not just about the team. Millennials can be exceedingly loyal to their supervisors as well. But only if these leaders treat every member of their peer group equitably. Recognizing certain individuals while ignoring or mistreating others will not score points with anyone in the Millennial demographic. As a matter of fact, in many cases it has motivated individuals to leave the corporate nest.
Remember, however, that Millennials can sense insincerity a mile away. Therefore, praise must be the real deal. False flattery and patronizing remarks will drive Millennials away as easily as waves of negative feedback.
Naturally, managers have both the right and the duty to offer constructive criticism when appropriate. And rest assured, Millennials fully recognize the necessity of making improvements in a work setting from time to time. However, it’s important for leaders to balance negative feedback with frequent praise. Supervisors who exclusively spotlight problems are planting the seeds of discontent.
