Opting Out of College Intact
You’ve studied your heart out, saved your pennies, bent over backwards for parents and teachers, and sacrificed all known earthly pleasures just to reach your destination – college. And now you want to what?….Leave?!! Duck! The gods are about to hurl thunderbolts. And that’ll be a week-long beach party compared to what your parents will unleash.
No matter. You’re determined to brave the onslaught in exchange for your freedom. Anything is better than enduring another second of world history lectures delivered by a professor with a passion for monotonous babbling. Or squandering precious hours hopelessly lost in an institutional wasteland.
You’re not alone. More and more students are seeing much greener grass on the other side of the campus. Whether it’s traveling, starting one’s own business, pursuing a non-academic occupation, or taking time for personal reflection, there are numerous roads to post-college success. But first you have to l-e-a-v-e.
Fortunately, I was scouring the latest wisdom promulgated by the UnCollege folks, and I discovered a gold mine of timely tips on this very topic. Follow these, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy a much smoother exit from college land. Here are several to get you started:
Create a Plan – As obvious as this is, many students don’t take this step. These are the people destined for more frustration and confusion. Believe me, you’ll be much happier knowing what you’ll be doing in the real world – working, volunteering, traveling, launching the next YouTube? This knowledge is a tremendous confidence-booster, especially for that moment when you parents demand, “so NOW what are you going to do?!”
Follow in Their Footsteps – Once your plan is in place, find somebody who’s already walked a similar road. This could be a friend, blogger you follow, relative, Yoda…whoever. This special person often proves an invaluable mentor capable of guiding you through the misty marshes of your future.
Give these steps some thought, and let me know what you think. More to come in upcoming blogs.
